Our work is not a particularly popular cause, as many people think that prisoners don’t deserve help.  So we rely quite heavily on grants and donations from Trusts and organisations who believe in what we do.  We are an extremely streamlined charity, with most of our costs going on project delivery. On average, our annual outgoings are £260,000 and we reach approximately 13,000 beneficiaries!

If you offer us a grant, no matter how big or small, we can demonstrate that your money will be well spent. If you think that prisoners deserve a chance to stay connected with their families, please get in touch.

Our Aims:

  • To help imprisoned parents maintain meaningful contact with their children and minimise the damage done to family relationships caused by incarceration.
  • To improve the well-being and reduce the stress and trauma experienced by the children of prisoners.
  • To enable imprisoned parents to help with their children’s education and development of their literacy skills.
  • To help prisoners to improve their parenting skills and increase their self-esteem and perceived value as a parent.
  • To enable prisoners to gain useful skills, such as literacy and IT thereby helping with successful resettlement.
Storybook Dads works in over 100 UK prisons (including women’s prisons) enabling imprisoned parents to create precious personalised gifts for their children. In most prisons this takes the form of a bedtime story CD, although some prisons also facilitate story DVDs or other educational gifts such as challenge charts or activity sheets.

The stories are edited by specially trained prisoners at our HQ in HMP Dartmoor. Since 2002 we have trained more than 880 prisoners to be editors, giving them useful skills, work experience and a better chance of employment upon release.
